Masters of Alabama BBQ
With 2015 declared as the “Year of Alabama BBQ,” the Alabama Tourism Department is proud to announce the debut of the Masters of Alabama BBQ. The exhibit, focusing on 26 popular Alabama barbecue chefs and their favorite dishes, includes Woodrow Washing.
There's a lot of heritage and a lot of great home-cooking going on in Woodrow Washington's little cinder-block building. Inside, Woodrow blends the deep barbecue traditions that come from both sides of the family with other offerings like pork chops, catfish and a wide variety of veggies. His chopped pork in a light vinigar sauce and smoked ribs draw in most customers though. Woodrow uses a wood smoker in place of a pit, but he sticks to wood for fuel. "We use hickory heat and hickory smoke," said Woodrow.
